Seeking passionate, resourceful instructional leader who will coach teachers to reach every
student and partner with students’ families and the community. First Mesa Elementary School is
an academically sound school with a growing enrollment. It is located in a modern education
facility with a qualified and supportive staff on the Hopi Reservation in Northern Arizona.

CONTRACT INFORMATION: This position will be filled by contract under P.L. 95-561
INDIAN PREFERENCE POLICY: Preference in filling this vacancy is given to qualified Indian
candidates in accordance with the Indian Preference Act of 1934 (Title 25, USC, Section 472)

STATEMENT OF DUTIES: This position of Principal will provide academic leadership, planning,
managing a K-6th grade school with approximately 90 students. This includes implementing an
academic model which focuses on high student achievement; building a positive school climate
that supports the whole student; leveraging research and data to drive initiatives and instruction;
direction and conduction of BIE school programs and building a high-performing staff and
leadership team to achieve the school’s vision and goals. The Principal will collaborate with
parents, community members, and the Education Line Office.
The incumbent will provide professional leadership to the faculty and is responsible for the
development of a school curriculum which aligns with the state standards of Arizona and the
Common Core State Standards. The Principal will oversee the budget program,
acquisitions, human resource services, property and supply with assistance from staff and the
Education Line Office. Be responsible for planning, implementing, supervising and coordinating
the safety program. Assign, supervise and direct the work of approximately 20 professional, paraprofessional,
contract education staff and wage employees. Oversee every aspect of the food
service program along with food service personnel. The Principal is responsible for promoting
activities that improve the general welfare of the school, enhance public relations with the
community and surrounding schools, and cooperate with other Bureau program personnel and
Federal/State officials administering other programs in the community.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Placement in the appropriate pay level is based exclusively on education level as follows:
Pay Level: 06
Education: Master’s Degree or Equivalent
A minimum of a Master’s Degree with 12 semester hours in school administration, teaching,
counseling or other professional education experience or a 6-year university administration
program is required. All professional educators will also meet the Arizona Certification Standards.
A minimum of 3 years teaching, counseling, or administrative experience is creditable toward
meeting the full qualification requirements.
A National Board Certified Teacher from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is
preferred.
BASIS OF RATING: All applicants for this position will be rated and ranked based upon the extent
and quality of their experience, training and/or education as reflected on the application. Applicants
will be further evaluated according to the degree to which they possess or have the potential to
acquire knowledge, skills, abilities, and personal characteristics as listed below. The judgment of
qualifications will be based on the material submitted; therefore, it is to the applicant’s advantage to
give complete and thorough responses and to present information in a neat and orderly fashion.
Qualifications and veteran’s preference eligibility will be determined on the basis of information
submitted.
SUITABILITY & CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
A background investigation is required. Appointment is subject to the successful completion of the
background investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to meet these requirements will be
grounds for termination.

You must be a U.S. citizen to qualify for this position.

be required to complete a Declaration for Federal Employment, OF-306. This is a Non-
Critical, Moderate Risk Position subject to a favorably adjudicated background
investigation.
